On 1–2 October 2026, the Centre for Ethics of the University of Tartu will celebrate its 25th anniversary. This quarter-century milestone provides an opportunity to bring together the Centre’s friends, partners, and experts from Estonia and abroad to reflect on the questions and issues shaping the role of ethics today and in the future.
The anniversary programme will take place on 1–2 October 2026, bringing together two days of celebration, reflection and discussion on the role of ethics in a changing world.

17:40–18:00 General Discussion
“The world has changed considerably over the past 25 years, but the need for ethics has not diminished. On the contrary, the faster technology and society develop, the more important it becomes to ask what we truly value and what we consider to be a good life. Ethics does not always provide ready-made answers, but it helps us recognise the values behind our choices, consider their implications, and navigate disagreements in a way that allows us to maintain common ground even when our views differ,” says Professor Margit Sutrop, founder and Head of the Centre for Ethics of the University of Tartu.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, we will also launch the newly published anniversary volume of the Centre for Ethics of the University of Tartu, “Murrang. Eetikast ja väärtustest muutuvas ajas” (Turning Point: Ethics and Values in a Changing World). Its contributors include former presidents, academics, researchers, practitioners, and prominent figures from public and cultural life who have helped shape discussions on values across different areas of Estonian society. The volume reflects on developments over recent decades, the challenges we face today, and what lies ahead.
The anniversary event brings together the Centre’s friends, partners and colleagues, and attendance is by invitation only.
The 25th anniversary celebrations of the University of Tartu Centre for Ethics are supported by the University of Tartu’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, and Faculty of Medicine.
