Estonian experience discussed at a European research integrity conference

Margit Sutrop, the Head of the Centre for Ethics, University of Tartu, and the project managers of the Centre Marten Juurik, Kristi Lõuk and Katrin Velbaum took part in the European research integrity conference „Why Research Integrity Matters to You” that was organised as a part of the PRINTEGER project and took place in Bonn, Germany, from the 5th to the 7th of February, 2018.

Taking part in the conference made it possible to share Estonian experience with a wider audience. In her presentation, professor Sutrop focused on ways to involve research community in the development of codes for research integrity. The participants of the conference shared their experiences with teaching research integrity. The experiences of institutions with establishing an in-house research integrity office and managing it from day to day were also discussed.

The additional programme of the conference was focused on the activities of the PRINTEGER project. The document that provides institutions with guidelines for protecting research integrity was prepared on the principles of consensus decision-making. Graduate students had an opportunity to participate in the testing of Upright, the teaching aid developed as a part of the project. Upright is a web-based framework for teaching research integrity. A novel aspect of Upright is the use of a thematic film in order to discuss the central issues of research integrity.
